これを数週間続けるうちに犬は「自分は無能で何をやってもムダだ」という感覚が植え付けられ、
そのうち 電気ショックを受けてももがかなくなり、ひたすら衝撃をガマンするだけになった』

これを心理学では「学習された無力感」と言う。

『極度の無気力状態に陥った事が確認された後、セリグマンは犬の縄をほどいて逃げられるようにしてやったがそれでも犬は黙って電気ショックを与えられるがままで逃げだそうとはしなかった。努力をムダだと信じ込んでしまった為「逃げる」という選択肢を失ってしまった。
そしてセリグマンは犬を抱き上げたり押したりして 電気ショックを受けない所まで動かしてやり「逃げれば助かる」という事を再度 学習させた後、再び元の場所に戻し電気ショックを与えた。
犬は逃げれば痛くないと 判ったはずなのにやはり動こうとはしなかった。
一度無気力状態になった犬はさっき痛くなかったのは誰かが助けてくれたせいで、自分では何も出来ないと信じていたのだ』”
