“実をいうと、「エンプロイー(従業員)」という概念は近代になって生み出されたもので、時代を超越した社会慣行ではない。

強い意思を持つ人間を従順な従業員に変えるために、二十世紀初頭にどれほど大規模な努力がなされ、それがどれほど成功したかを見ると、マルクス主義者でなくてもぞっとさせられる。近代工業化社会の職場が求めるものを満たすために、人間の習慣や価値観を徹底的につくり変える必要があった。

生産物ではなくて時間を売ること
仕事のペースを時計に合わせること
定められた間隔で食事をし、睡眠をとること
同じ単純作業を一日中再現なく繰り返すこと

これらのどれ一つとして人間の自然な本能ではなかった(もちろん、今でもそうではない)。したがって「従業員」という概念が—また、近代経営管理の教義の他のどの概念であれ—永遠の真実という揺るぎないものに根ざしていると思いこむのは危険である。(P163)”
